For families
What is Legacy Guard?
Legacy Guard is an app your estate planning attorney gives you. It has two halves. The Plan side keeps your estate plan current with a short annual review. The Stories side keeps the stories, letters, recordings, and photos you want your family to have, encrypted so only you can open them until the time you choose.
How do I get Legacy Guard?
Through your estate planning attorney. Your firm adds your household, and you receive an email with a sign in link. There is no password to remember for signing in. If your firm does not use Legacy Guard yet, ask them to request a demo.
How long does the annual review take?
About 25 minutes for most families. It has six short parts, it saves as you go, and you can stop and come back. Your attorney reads what you flagged and calls you if something needs a look.
Does the annual review change my estate plan?
No. Nothing you do in Legacy Guard changes your plan. A yes answer only tells your firm where to look. If something needs a change, a real person at your firm will call you.
What is a story?
Anything you want your family to have of you: a memory written down, a voice recording, a video, a photo with a caption, or a file you already have. The guide asks one good question at a time, so a story is never hard to start.
Can my spouse see my stories?
No. The Plan side is shared by your household and your firm. The Stories side is private to the one person who made it. Your spouse never sees your stories, letters, recipients, or the guide's questions, not even a count.
Who receives my stories, and when?
You choose. Add recipients by name and email, then for each story or letter decide whether they receive it now or after you are gone. After you are gone is the default. Nothing is ever delivered on a timer or because you went quiet.
Do my recipients need an account?
No. Each recipient gets an email with a private link. To open it they type the email address or phone number you had on file for them. Three wrong tries lock the link.
What if I forget my stories password?
You can choose a new one while signed in. Your old password stops working at once and nothing you made is lost. The reset is written to an audit log that cannot be edited.
Can I take my information with me?
Yes, on every plan. Export everything builds one archive with your plan summary, documents, stories, letters, recordings, and photos. It is built on your own device and works without Legacy Guard.
For attorneys
What does Legacy Guard cost a law firm?
Nothing. Firms pay nothing to join and every household they add is on the free Basic plan. A firm can prepay the Complete plan for clients in blocks of 10, 25, or 50 seats, or let clients pay for Complete themselves.
What does the firm see?
The whole Plan side of each household: the review answers side by side, flags, tasks, meeting requests, documents, the people in the plan, funding, and Plan Health. The firm never sees a client's stories, letters, recipients, or the guide, not even a count.
How does the annual review reach clients?
The firm sets the review date, usually one year from signing. Legacy Guard sends the invitation, a pre-notice 30 days before, a reminder 7 days before, a note on the day, and two follow-ups. Each step goes once, and the sequence stops when the review is complete.
What happens when a client flags something?
The flag lands on the firm's dashboard and in a digest email with the household, the answer, and a one line summary. Each flag has Propose meeting and Mark handled. A move to another state carries a plain summary of the new state's rules.
Does the firm approve the release of stories after a death?
No, and that protects the firm. The firm can report a passing and attest to it. Two different people at Legacy Guard verify it through a checklist, a waiting period passes, and only then is anything released. The firm is never the one who decides.
Can we brand it as our own?
Yes. Clients sign in under your firm's name, logo, and colors, with a small Powered by Legacy Guard line. Every email carries your firm's name.
How many staff can sign in?
Each firm has a number of staff logins set when the firm joins. Staff have one of three roles: attorney, admin, or paralegal. Paralegals read every household and handle flags but cannot report a passing, buy seats, or change settings.
What does a firm need to get started?
A list of households with a name, each person's email, the state, and the review month. Add them one at a time or import a CSV. Set your firm's state so the right law updates reach your clients.
Security and privacy
Can Legacy Guard read my stories?
No. Stories are encrypted in your browser before they are saved, with a key only your stories password can open. Legacy Guard holds scrambled text and locked keys. There is no screen and no key that shows anyone at Legacy Guard a story.
What does Legacy Guard see about me?
Your name and contact details, your plan type, your renewal date, your storage as a number, and which firm and attorney serve you. Never your plan contents, never your stories, never a recipient's name.
What would a database leak reveal?
Scrambled story content and locked keys, which are useless without your stories password. Story metadata such as counts, dates, sizes, and recipient names is readable, and so is the Plan side, which your firm already works on with you.
If only I hold the key, how can my stories be released after I die?
A copy of your key is locked to an escrow key whose private half is split in two. One half lives only on the server, the other only in the database. Neither alone opens anything. The server combines them in memory only after two verifiers approve a passing, or when you reset your stories password, and each moment is written to an audit log.
Can an authorized contact see my stories?
No. An authorized contact can report a passing and is asked to check on you if you go quiet. They never see what you saved.
Are legal documents sent to recipients?
No. Legal documents are never distributed through the Stories side. Your signed documents live in the vault on the Plan side, which your firm manages with you.
What are the honest limits?
Someone who controlled both the server and the database at the same moment could read a key during a release. A compromised device sees what you see. A weak stories password is a weak lock. Metadata is visible. And once a story is delivered, the recipient can keep it.
Billing
What is free?
The Basic plan: the annual review, meeting requests, reminders, your firm's law updates, the Plan Health score, life event check-ins, milestones, the people in your plan, referrals, and Export everything. Every household gets it at no charge.
What does Complete cost?
$149 a year or $14.99 a month, with 10 GB of story storage. Complete includes everything on the Plan side and the whole Stories side.
Is there a trial?
Yes. A 30 day trial of Complete with no card. During the trial you get 1 GB of storage and videos stop at 3 minutes. If you do not continue, your stories stay readable for 90 days and the Plan side is untouched.
What if I need more storage?
Add 100 GB for $29 a year, as many blocks as you need. You are warned by email at 80, 95, and 100 percent. Nothing you saved is ever deleted because of space.
What happens if I cancel Complete?
Your household enters Kept mode for two years: everything saved stays readable, exportable, and deliverable, and nothing new can be added. Reactivate brings Complete back. A one time 20 year hold for $199 keeps everything held whatever happens to the plan.
Can my firm pay for Complete?
Yes. Firms buy Complete seats in blocks of 10, 25, or 50 and assign one to your household for a year. Many firms fold that into their own fee so you never see a Legacy Guard charge.
After a passing
How is a passing reported?
By family through the form on the emergency card, by an authorized contact, by the firm from the household page, or by calling Legacy Guard. One open request per person; a second report attaches as more evidence.
What happens the moment a passing is reported?
The person it is about is emailed a one tap halt link, their authorized contacts are told, the firm is asked to attest, every verifier at Legacy Guard is alerted, and the waiting period starts. Any sign in by the person halts the request automatically.
How long is the waiting period?
Seven days by default and never under 72 hours. Nothing can be approved until it has passed with no sign of life.
Who verifies, and how?
Two different people at Legacy Guard. The first confirms the reporter by phone, confirms the relationship, confirms the passing by a second independent source, checks the death certificate, and records the firm's attestation. The second reviews every item again and approves by typing the person's last name. The database refuses any other path.
What do recipients receive?
An email that the person left something for them, with a private link. They type the email or phone on file, read the personal message first, then each story and letter in the order chosen. Save everything builds one file they keep.
How long do recipients have?
Two years from the release. At month 20 they are emailed that it will be removed in four months, with monthly reminders after that. The stories themselves are never deleted at that point; the household still owns them.
What if the firm closes?
The release still happens. Because Legacy Guard verifies, not the firm, a closed or silent firm never blocks a verified release.
